Special Classes
OWN students have weekly instruction in physical education, art, music, foreign language, story telling and library use.
- OWN physical education and health classes are taught at the Astoria Sports Complex. Students are introduced to a wide range of physical activities and sports. Teachers also provide instruction in health and sportsmanship.
- OWN recognizes the importance of exposure to a variety of art media and forms. Art classes guide students in creating their own works of art as well as exploring art history.
- OWN music introduces children to a wide range of musical styles, instruments, and traditions. Children sing together and explore rhythm, sound, and musical structures.
- OWN includes conversational Spanish language classes for all grade levels starting in Kindergarten. Classes include exploration of cultures, exposure to a rich collection of Spanish books and engaging activities.
- Story is a regularly scheduled class K-5. The storyteller introduces children to the roots of literature by telling stories from classics -- such as the Iliad and Odyssey, Norse myths, the Ramayana, and other basic bodies of myth. Other story sets explore themes and concepts. Students develop listening and speaking skills and strategies for analyzing narrative structures and making cross-cultural comparisons.
- The Library at OWNCS supports the curriculum of the school and assists students and staff to locate and use material for both their classroom and recreational reading needs. During Library classes at OWNCS, the students are taught to use the library and its resources including the proper care of books. Students are introduced to new and classic literature and taught to recognize, evaluate and use the vast amount of information available through the library.
