Support Services
Support Services at OWNCS include intervention services provided to students having academic or behavioral difficulties and mandated services provided to students evaluated by the DOE and found to have a disability.
- OWN intervention services are provided by the Reading Intervention teacher, the Social Worker, the ESL teacher and the Special Education Staff. Students are evaluated and those requiring services are identified.
- A Multi-disciplinary Child Study Team (CST) comprising Special Ed staff, social worker, ESL teacher, reading intervention teacher, administrators, and the classroom teacher meet to determine needs of individual students, and to create an individualized academic and/or behavior plan.
- OWN provides Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETTS). Classroom teacher collaborate with Special Ed teachers to create individual programs. OWN provides a combination of intensive, small group academic support in "pull-out" sessions for SETTS.
- The OWN Speech and Language Therapy teacher collaborates with classroom teachers to provide students having communication delays or disorders with focused instruction.
- Occupational Therapy is provided several times a week, to students exhibiting delays in development, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, medical diagnosis, or sensory disfunction.
- There is no Physical Therapy program in the school, but teachers and CST members will help parents find a local service provider.
- Our social worker provides services that address the social and emotional lives of our students. This includes working with teachers and families to ensure that every child has an equal chance to succeed.
- The English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher develops individual programs geared to each student's level of English proficiency in collaboration with classroom teachers.
- The OWN Reading Program provides extra reading support. In addition to instruction provided in the regular classroom, children receive reading strategies and skills practice in a small group. Selection for the Reading Program is based on teacher recommendations and individual test scores.
