Our Falcons played their first game of the season today against Harriet Tubman Charter School. Their first step in defending our 2017 Region 1 title and trying to win their 7th in 10 seasons.

It was perfect weather for football and for the Falcons to fly high as we started off the game on offense. 8th grader Sunai Regap continued his excellent play from last season. He led our offense to scoring drives on all of our offensive possessions. He connected for three touchdowns and there were only three incomplete passes the entire game (all dropped by receivers).

Our other 8th grade veterans also packed their A games today. Brahma Acevedo also picked up right where he left off last season. He finished the day with one rushing touchdown, one interception and several tackles (flag grabs). Joshua Persaud caught several passes. One for a huge gain. He was also solid on the defensive end. Brian Wilk was solid on defense and caught his first touchdown, a bomb over the middle of the field. Christopher Galindo was huge for us on the offensive end, catching several passes in big moments. Including a diving catch for an extra point. Justin Alston had a strong performance. Scoring a touchdown with 4 seconds remaining in the first half, on a cross filed strike thrown by Sunai. 7th grader Clifford King contributed and scored his first touchdown of his career on a fake reverse play.

Final score OWN 32- HTCS- 14.

It was an all around solid effort from the team. Big shout out to Ms. Angrum for coming out, rocking her OWN gear, taking pictures and supporting the squad!

The Falcons played their second game of the season this long weekend. Saturday afternoon they went up against fellow Queens charter school, Growing Up Green. Last season they defeated the Falcons by a score of 6-0. That was fresh on their minds going into Saturday's game.

Defensively, the Falcons shut down Growing Up Green's pass and run game on their first two drives. 8th graders Joshua Persuad, Brahma Acevedo and Brian Wilk have been very impressive defensively thus far, making it tough for opposing teams to pass or run the ball. Fellow 8th grader Nia Novotny was huge in the game as well, making several tackles for little to no gain at the giver position. Justin Alston was also impactful on the defensive end with the only interception of the game. Growing Up Green did not have a pass completion for more than 3-5 yards. The Falcons also took away Growing Up Green's run game that hurt us last season. However, Growing Up Green had one great run during the game which resulted in a touchdown due to a defensive mental error.

Offensively the Falcons came out sharp, led by 8th grader Sunai Regap who has come into his own this year and becoming the confident, deceptive and precise quarterback the coaching staff knew he would be. He threw for four touchdowns in the game. Two of the four were well read bombs (to Christopher Galindo and Brian Wilk). The other two he connected with Brahma Acevedo and Justin Alston. Brahma was huge on offense in the air and on the ground. Creating something out of nothing and getting open when Sunai needed him most. Nia Novotny caught her first pass as a Falcon for a huge gain.

Against Dream, the Falcons did not miss a beat. The defense was solid all the way around. Many of the young Falcons got into the action and contributed on both ends of the field.

On offense Sunai threw for two touchdowns, both to Brahma Acevedo. Mario Suazo ran for a touchdown. Mario Suazo has become an integral part of our offense and defense with his impressive foot work and blazing speed. 7th grader, William Fenichel, made several catches today playing in his first game of the season. 6th grader, Billy Fiuaxis, made his first catch (many more to come) as a Falcon.

On the defensive end, Christopher Galindo has his first interception of the season and as a Falcon. William Fenichel and Brahma Acevedo almost had interceptions in the game, but could not hold on to the ball. Nia Novotny had a huge bat down on third down forcing Dream to punt the ball. 6th grader Aedan Knipes played in his first game and played solid defense.

Final score OWN 21 - Dream Charter School 6.

The Falcons continue to fly high as they faced Health and Science Charter School on Saturday. The team focused on the word complacent this week as they continue to work on moving from good to great. They took a huge step closer by getting their first shut out of the season.

The Falcons started off the game on offense and set the tone for the game on the first play. Sunai Regap connected with Brahma Acevedo on a 4 yard crossing route pass that turned into a touchdown as Brahma zigged and zagged through defenders. On the Falcons' first defensive play of the game Senior Na Novotny had the presence of mind to pick off a fumbled ball that was handed off to the opposing team's running back, spin away and get into the end zone for her first touchdown of her Falcon career (clip below). Health and Science was demoralized and could not get into a groove with the Falcons' stifling defense.

Quarterback Sunai Regap played another masterful game. He distributed the game evenly and very effectively. Newbies Billy Fuiaxis (2 receptions), Logan Hernandez (1 reception) and Andrew Batista (1 reception for a TD) all caught their first passes. Justin Alston was solid on both ends of the ball and scored a touchdown. Nia Novotny had a huge day (2 receptions, an INT and a touchdown). Total team effort, all of the children played and contributed.

Senior Brian Wilk did not play (injured wrist). He still showed up to support them team. Fellow 8th grader Joshua Persaud saw limited action due to an injury early in the game.

The friendship, enthusiasm and leadership displayed this season from our veterans is making for another very special season.

Big shout out to Mr. Kindness (Mr. Cruz) for coming our to support the team!

The Falcons tried to extend their win streak to 5 games as they went toe to toe with Promise 2 Academy Charter School whose record was 4-1 coming into Saturday's game.

The Falcons started with the ball on offense, but could not punch the ball in on our first drive of the game, even though we moved the ball down the field very well. On Promise 2's first drive our defense was solid and forced them to punt on three plays. On our second drive of the game we able to score because of Brahma Acevedo's ability to maneuver through PA2's defense on a short pass from quarterback Sunai Regap. On the extra point attempt, Sunai tried to thread the needle and it was intercepted. Despite Sunai's valiant effort to dive to try and tackle the player who intercepted the ball, PA2 scored and were awarded 1 point. On PA2's second drive of the game, senior Christopher Galindo intercepted a pass thrown over the middle of the field. That turnover lead to another touchdown and opened the flood gates. Sunai Regap brilliant play continued. He made great decisions and beautiful passes the entire game and distributed the ball evenly. 7th grader Mia Minor and 8th grader Cyrus Wilpan both made their first receptions of their careers.

Our defense was solid once again, with two more interceptions on the day. One by senior Brian Wilk (first of the season and career) and the other by fellow senior Mario Suazo, which resulted in a touchdown/pick 6 (second interception of the season). Newcomers Jaidyn Rennie and Javen Ventura both played substantial minutes and played well on defense. And 5th grader, David Ortiz saw some action in his first game (he was promoted from a practice player to a game player last week).

Final score OWN 31 - PA2 7. The Falcons improve their record to 5-0 on the season with three regular season games remaining. Big shout outs to Mrs. Pabon and Ms. Angrum for coming to the game and supporting the team.

The Falcons take on Carl Ichan Charter School this Saturday, October 27th at Eugene McCabe Field at 2:30pm. The team will have their yearly BBQ after the game at the field.
